Maxime’s typical day is spent in front of his computer (& several monitors) analysing the data collected in various projects and making our algorithms smarter. This also involves making sure the results get displayed adequately on client dashboard portals. However, last week, his day was a little different...
He was invited to help with an installation on an active steel plant of one of our clients!.
Preparations started early. At large industrial sites, safety and security are paramount, so this was the first test: complete the test, and you’re allowed on site. Maxime successfully passed the test. He was accompanying our colleague Floris - an Operations Engineer - for this specific installation. This was the first time he had to wear the full range of personal protection equipment: jacket, pants, safety shoes, helmet, goggles, safety harness, gas detector...
Their first task was to drill a hole for a sensor mounting bracket. However, they were stopped rapidly because five seconds later, the drill head broke. Luckily, they packed spare equipment and Floris was close by to assist with the change and ensure the job was done.
Typically, we (Zensor) work closely with the client technicians whilst on site. The next step was to have a technician from the client welding the sensor bracket on the machine frame. Lunch was a quick stop at ‘Quick’ (punny, we know), and they had to be quick because access to a large steel plant is a rare occurrence and working efficiently is vital.
The next task was to essentially fit a large electrical cabinet through a tight passage, and they quickly realised this would not be an easy job. So, plan B; by using a rope to lower the cabinet, they were able to avoid the tight passage while safeguarding the integrity of the cabinet. Connecting the sensors leads to the cabinet was the final job, while Maxime was there to be on the watch.
Lastly, they both got a tour of the site by the local site manager. This part of the day was especially exciting for Maxime since being trained as a Mechanical Engineer, it was great to see just how big the machines he was analysing are and how they interact with each other.
Thanks to this experience he now has a better understanding of the client’s needs and challenges. New knowledge he can now use to effectively analyse the data and pull as many relevant insights as possible out of it!
Hope to see you soon, with a new adventure from one of our team members!
